Record-breaking heat – 110 miserable degrees in Hollywood and 97 degrees down in El Porto, the north end of Manhattan Beach – and a pall in the air – alkali dust is blowing in off the Mojave – a brown haze that finally settles in over the Pacific out to the horizon.
