The Charlie Chaplin Studios were built for him in 1917 at the corner of La Brea and Sunset Boulevard – he filmed "Modern Times" and "The Great Dictator" here – but he had been born in 1889 in Walworth, South London, in poverty, so he had ordered up a Tudor mansion.
